A ribbon cutting was held at Topeka Correctional Facility in June of 2019 for The Last Mile computer coding program. The inaugural class had fifteen women, most of which had no exposure to technology. Speaking at the ceremony was the Secretary of Commerce David Toland who spoke to the women directly:

“You’re going to be able to make an impact in companies. You’re going to be employable as soon as you get out the door,” Kansas Secretary of Commerce, David Toland, said to the group. “Our goal as a state is to help you reenter the state, find these jobs, and stay in Kansas. We need you here. We want you here.”

The state is in the process of building relationships with businesses to hire women on their release.
