The Last Mile, a non-profit based in San Francisco, is the first prison program in the US to provide in-prison software engineering training. the goal is to prepare students for employment as front-end developers and web designers post-release. Students learn HTML, CSS, Javascript, Python and more. We believe that having a job is the key to successful reentry and breaking the cycle of incarceration. A projected shortage of nearly 1 million software engineering jobs by 2020 means that these jobs skills will be in demand. Through in-prison software engineering training and continued mentorship post-release, The Last Mile bridges the gap between incarceration and freedom.
Position Description:
The TLM Works JV Supervisor in the California Institute for Women is the onsite-supervisor of the TLM Works Web Developers in CIW. This position handles implementing day-to-day operations of the development team, including agile task management and flow, overseeing code reviews and auditing and architecture design and discussion with developers. The role of the on-site supervisor serves as a liaison between the TLM Works developers in CIW and the TLM Works Manager, facilitating communication within the team, relaying project requirements and supervising text and video communication between team members.
Classroom Facilitators work on-site with state prison inmates enrolled in Code.7370 software training program. This role combines teaching, mentoring, supervisory, and administrative tasks to ensure a positive and supportive learning environment. Facilitation is one of many teaching methods, but it is the primary method used in this role. Awareness and sensitivity to diverse identities is key to creating a learning environment for Code.7370 students to succeed.
Administrative:
- Manage development team tasks, priorities and protocols.
- Facilitate communication with team partners outside of CIW.
- Obtain resources for developers.
- Aid in managing classrooms, including opening and closing room for students
and maintaining all required prison security protocols.
Mentorship:
- Advocate for each student’s well-being including empathetic listening and establishing rapport with correctional staff and CIW education faculty.
- Communicate with TLM Works Manager and Director of Programs to ensure effective JV program implementation.
- Empower developers and students to set and work towards individual goals and self-advocate.
Teaching:

Support classroom facilitators with administrative, teaching and various classroom activities.
Administrative:
- Manage classroom including opening and closing room for students and maintaining all required prison security protocols.
- Keep records of any student or equipment issues.
- Provide feedback to The Last Mile program and curriculum team.
Mentorship:
- Advocate for each student’s well-being including empathetic listening and establishing rapport with correctional staff and CIW education faculty.
- Communicate with Curriculum Director and Virtual Mentorship program to implement and improve curriculum content and live instruction.
- Empower students to set and work towards individual goals and self-advocate.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree with demonstrated academic, professional, and/or volunteer experience working with diverse groups in a leadership position; bachelor’s degrees in computer science, humanities, or a social science
- Proficiency in coding, new technologies, and/or entrepreneurship; comfortable working with computers and navigating websites.
- Preference given to those with experience working with incarcerated individuals and/or at-risk youth
- 1-2 years demonstrated experience working with Web Development technologies and practices is a plus.

- Confidence speaking to groups of various size in a teaching situation.
- Comfortable sketching concepts and solutions on a whiteboard.
- Able to distill novel, complex problems into discrete, actionable components using analogous teaching methods.
- Able to guide students to discover answers to their own questions.
- Maintain a positive and supportive attitude at all times.
- Provide honest and constructive feedback and appropriate encouragement to students.
- Preference is given to those with a basic knowledge of and experience with fundamental web technologies including HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript.
